Irene Cara, Oscar winning actress and singer known for “Fame,” and “Flashdance,” has died at 63

Her publicist announced that Irene Cara, who was best known for her singing of the title songs to “Fame,” and “Flashdance,” had died on Saturday.

Cara was born in New York and was 63 years old.

“It is with profound sorrow that I announce, on behalf of her loved ones, the passing of Irene Cara.” read the statement on Cara’s Twitter page Judith A. Moose is her publicist. “The Academy Award winning actress and singer, songwriter, producer, died in her Florida residence.”

Moose stated that the cause of death was not known and that funeral services are pending.

Moose stated, “She was a beautiful gifted soul whose legacy is forever through her films and music.”

Moose encouraged Cara’s fans to share their Cara memories.

Moose stated, “This is the worst part about being a publicist.”  “I cannot believe that I have to write this and release the news. Please share your thoughts, memories, and photos of Irene. Each and every one will be read by me and I know she’ll smile from Heaven. She loved her fans.”

Cara was nominated to the best actress Golden Globes for her performance in 1980’s musical “Fame.” She also won an Oscar in 1984 for co-writing and singing the theme song for “Flashdance.” Cara has also been a Grammy nominee and performed in many live theatre performances throughout her career.

On Saturday, celebrities and fans shared their reactions to Cara’s death via social networking.

Singer Deborah Cox wrote, “Irene Cara is who inspired me growing up to be a “triple threat” ….that you could not only have hit records but I have a hit tv show and slay…..a bright light for the culture.”
