Three substations that supply power to Tacoma in Washington were vandalized on Sunday. The incident knocked out power for around 14,000 customers. 

According to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department, the first substation was located in Spanaway (Washington) and belonged to Tacoma Public Utilities. It was attacked at around 5:30 a.m. local. According to police, nothing was taken, but the equipment was vandalized and caused outages.

According to police, another TPU substation in the area was also vandalized.

According to police, a substation owned by Puget Sound Energy also was vandalized in the morning. The power was restored at 2:30 a.m. local. Police were alerted at around 11:30 AM. When they arrived on the scene, they discovered that “the fence area was broken into” and that equipment had been vandalized. It was similar to the other substations.

There are no suspects in custody. It is not clear whether all three substations were vandalized simultaneously or by different people.

Tacoma Public Utilities reported that only 900 of 7,300 customers who lost power at 5:30 p.m. EST were still without power.
