Philipp Aduatz: World’s first 3D-printed film studio

Philipp Aduatz was commissioned by the Casinos Austria and Austrian Lotteries Group to design and realize the first 3D-printed film studio. A unique structure that uses additive manufacturing and the most recent LED technology was created in collaboration with Dominik Freynschlag, set designer and 3D concrete printer manufacturer incremental3d.

Concrete walls were printed in 10 steps using a 3D concrete printing process that uses a special mortar made from white cement. The 60 segments make up the wall. Six parts are stacked one upon another to create a segment in height. The wall is easily disassembled by simply screwing the individual pieces together in each horizontal plane. This makes it safe for operation.

The main component of the lighting system consists of 14 LED strips that are inserted horizontally in prefabricated joints. These can be controlled using the RGB color space, which allows for a wide range of colors and gradients. The lighting technology can be seamlessly integrated into the design by replacing the printed layers with LED strips of equal thickness. Each LED element is connected to the rest via computer-aided controls, allowing for virtually unlimited color combinations.

Concrete 3D printing is a viable alternative to traditional concrete construction methods because of its material-saving qualities. Concrete 3D printing does not require any formwork materials, which means that waste is kept to a minimum. Recycling can be further simplified if there is no reinforcement, as it is with the film studio.

Additive manufacturing with concrete components are suitable for use in building construction. They also have completely new creative possibilities and possibilities in interior design, especially when combined with LED technology. This project is an example of this.

The wall is 3.500kg in total. The wall’s exterior dimensions are 630cm in width, 325cm in depth and 230cm in height.
