Kroger begins testing cake printing robot from Beehex in Ohio

The Spoon reported that Kroger, a grocery giant, began testing a robot for printing cakes made by Beehex late last month in Gahanna, Ohio.

Beehex is the company that created the new Cake Writer. It allows consumers to type in a message, and then watch it be decorated instantly. Depending on what message you choose, the cake decoration will take anywhere from two to fourteen minute. The machines are loaded with hundreds different designs and fonts that the customer can choose from.

Beehex CEO Anjan Contractor said to The Spoon the company plans to install 10 Beehex Cake Writers in the Columbus Market next year. The startup also plans to install 350 machines with Kroger in the future.

Contractor estimates that a typical machine will cost around $10000 when mass produced. Ongoing costs include $50 per month for cloud database maintenance and $5-6 per 20 oz frosting cartridge.

I don’t know about you, but I would gladly pay for a customized cake. Our family just celebrated a special birthday and I had no choice but to buy frosting and scrawl a name on top of the cake in my atrophied hands. A customized image with legible writing is something I’d pay for.

Below is a video of the Cake Writer being used by Beehex.
